Hyaluronic acid

At DAGDERM clinics in Warsaw, we use hyaluronic acid – a substance naturally present in the human body – for modern, safe aesthetic treatments. Thanks to its unique water-binding properties, hyaluronic acid effectively improves skin hydration, firmness and elasticity, while stimulating collagen production.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural glycosaminoglycan – a type of biopolymer found in skin, connective tissue, and joint fluid. It is responsible for maintaining proper tissue hydration and elasticity. Hyaluronic acid molecules form a gel-like structure that:

  • fills the intercellular spaces,
  • acts as a biological “lubricant”,
  • provides a scaffolding for skin cells.

As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the body decreases, leading to dry skin, loss of volume, and the formation of wrinkles. Treatments with HA can effectively reverse or slow down these processes.

Hyaluronic Acid Treatments

  • smooth out wrinkles,
  • restore facial volume (volumetrics),
  • shape and enlarge lips,
  • improve facial contours.

The effects are visible immediately after treatment and can last up to 18 months. These procedures are minimally invasive, safe, and require minimal recovery time – patients can quickly return to daily activities.

How does hyaluronic acid work?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance with strong hygroscopic properties – it binds water in tissues, intensively moisturizing the skin and compensating for the loss of volume. In its cross-linked (more stable) form, it persists longer in the tissue, so it effectively fills in wrinkles and folds.
In addition, hyaluronic acid stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen, resulting in improved firmness, elasticity and overall skin condition. This makes it not only a filler, but also a substance demonstrating biorevitalizing properties.

Filling in wrinkles and folds

The procedure involves precise injection of cross-linked hyaluronic acid into areas of volume loss – such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines, or wrinkles around the mouth. The result is smoother, tighter skin and a rejuvenated facial appearance.

Indications:

  • Facial and static wrinkles, especially nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Volume loss around the cheeks, temples, or under the eyes
  • Lost skin firmness and elasticity associated with aging
  • Dryness and a decrease in skin tone

Course of treatment:

  • Consultation and qualification – The doctor assesses the condition of the skin, discusses the patient’s needs, achievable results, and rules out contraindications.
  • Local anesthesia – Lidocaine cream is applied to the treatment area to increase comfort and minimize pain.
  • Administration of the product – Cross-linked hyaluronic acid is administered with a thin needle or microcannula into selected areas requiring correction.
  • Shaping and massage – The doctor gently molds the product into the tissue to achieve an even, natural effect with no visible transitions.
  • Inspection of the final result – Symmetry is checked, and minor corrections are made if necessary.

The procedure takes between 20 and 45 minutes, with local anesthesia for an additional 30–40 minutes.

Effects of hyaluronic acid filling:

  • Immediate smoothing of wrinkles and replenishment of volume
  • Improved skin hydration, tone, and elasticity
  • Natural facial rejuvenation effect without exaggeration
  • The results can be maintained for 6 to 12 months, depending on the type of preparation and the patient’s lifestyle
2

Facial volumetry

A volumetric lift using a denser HA preparation can restore lost volume in the cheeks, temples, zygomatic bones and jawline. The treatment improves facial contours, restores proportions and has a lifting effect – without a scalpel.

Indications:

  • Loss of facial volume associated with age, weight reduction or photoaging
  • Depressions in the cheeks, temples and jaw area – resulting in a flatter facial oval
  • Uneven skin texture as a result of scarring or trauma

Course of treatment:

  • Facial analysis – the doctor determines the injection points for a harmonious, lifting effect
  • Local anesthesia – application of lidocaine cream for maximum comfort
  • Hyaluronic acid injection – administration of dense, cross-linked hyaluronic acid into the deep layers of the skin using a microcannula (minimizes the risk of bruising)
  • Contour shaping – molding and balancing volume in the cheeks, temples and/or along the jawline
  • Evaluation of the effect and postoperative recommendations

The procedure takes between 20 and 45 minutes, with local anesthesia for an additional 30–40 minutes.

Effects of facial volumetrics with hyaluronic acid:

  • Visible cheek lift and facial oval improvement
  • Filling depressions and leveling the deep folds
  • A younger, more rested appearance
  • The effect can be maintained for 9 to 18 months, depending on the preparation used

Lip shaping and augmentation

Using hyaluronic acid, we precisely model the shape of the lips – emphasizing the contour, filling in the lips, correcting asymmetry and moisturizing the delicate lip skin. The effect is natural, subtle and tailored to the patient’s facial features.

Indications:

  • Thin, not very expressive lips
  • Red lip asymmetry and blurred outline
  • “Smoker’s wrinkles” and loss of Cupid’s bow outline

Course of treatment:

  • Consultation – discussing the patient’s expectations, planning the proportion and shape of the lips
  • Local anesthesia – application of lidocaine cream to increase comfort
  • Hyaluronic acid injection – application of hyaluronic acid with a needle or microcannula into the periphery of the red zone of the lip and around the corners of the mouth
  • Gentle modeling – even distribution of the product
  • Final observation – resting for 15–20 minutes, checking symmetry and appearance

The procedure takes about 20 minutes, with local anesthesia – an additional 20–30 minutes.

Effects of lip shaping:

  • Instantly improved volume, shape and contour of the lips
  • Smoothing and moisturizing the red zone of the lips
  • Subtle, natural effect – full result visible after 1–2 weeks (after swelling subsides)
  • The effect can be maintained for 6–12 months, with the possibility of a correction

Recommendations after treatment with hyaluronic acid

For optimal and lasting results, it is recommended to:

  • Avoid exercise and skin warming (e.g., sauna, tanning bed, hot baths) for 3–7 days after the treatment
  • Hydrate your body – drinking plenty of water promotes hyaluronic acid binding in the tissues and prolongs the treatment effect
  • Avoid intense facial expressions, touching the treatment area, and applying makeup for the first 24 hours
  • Sleep on your back (especially after volumetric procedures) to avoid putting pressure on the injection sites
  • Maintain hygiene – change pillowcases to clean ones, avoid contact with contaminated surfaces to minimize the risk of infection

Contraindications to hyaluronic acid treatments

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Active skin infections (herpes, acne), inflammation
  • Autoimmune disorders, cancer, uncontrolled systemic diseases (e.g., diabetes, hypertension)
  • Blood clotting disorders, susceptibility to hypertrophic scarring
  • Allergy to the ingredients of the preparation
